I think of myself as a general practitioner, whose personal style is warm and interactive. I utilize a relational approach informed by acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and mindful cognitive-behavioral (CBT) principles. Psychotherapy at Third Wave Wellness provides a unique opportunity to transform one’s suffering. Learning to be more present, create space for discomfort, and mine for greater meaning allows us to take new actions to find joy, calm and purpose. Therapy is highly collaborative, and we work together toward your goals. I received a BA in English from Skidmore College, and also studied photography, dance, and theatre for many years. I attended Smith College for my MSW, and very much value the wonderful clinician education I received there. In recent years I have pursued advanced training in Trauma, Gottman Couples Therapy, and Contextual Behavioral or Third Wave therapies. I loved being a student, and enjoy my continuing education.

Because at our core we are social beings, relationships are central to our lives. These relationships not only include our relationships with others but also our relationship with ourselves and society as a whole. Based on this lens, my goal as a therapist is to help you gain insight into how these relationships are influencing your current experiences. In particular, we will look closely at family relationships, as they are often the first relationships in which we learn how to be in relation with others. Additionally, we will pay special attention to all of the identities that you hold (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, and more) in order to address how issues of power, privilege, and oppression impact your day-to-day being. By gaining such insight, you will find yourself feeling able to enact intentional and meaningful change, including finding new and different ways of coping and being.

I come from Strengths - Based and Cognitive Behavioral approaches sprinkled in with some Dialectical Behavioral Approach into my ten years plus of experience doing therapy. My work with clients is collaborative. I don't just focus on one or two specific modalities and I can be eclectic in my approach depending on what clients bring into their session. Because therapy may bring up different levels of discomfort because of the unpleasant emotions, memories or thoughts that come up, I believe that in order to engage in this therapeutic process, a therapist and client should be able to establish rapport as well as to promote a safe and nonjudgmental environment. John Hughes

Before I became a Clinical Counselor I worked in a the corporate sector and quickly saw the consequences of a widespread lack of emotional and relational intelligence. Because of this need I returned to grad school to learn how person and client centered approaches could help individuals, couples and families lead happier and more successful lives. I spent the first few years of my clinical work at a renowned trauma practice in Chicago (Center for Contextual Change) where I was trained in systemic approaches toward the management of Trauma, PTSD, Personality Disorders, Anxiety and Depression. Because of this invaluable experience my work will always be trauma informed and sensitive. Over the past two years I have devoted the majority of my training to relationship centered approaches such as PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy) in which I am a Level II Certified Clinician. I am also trained in and utilize DBT, CBT, ACT and Motivational Interviewing in my work.

I come to anxiety work with an understanding that the way people reduce anxiety is by facing fears and trudging through. I know this process may happen very quickly but often takes time. I am a big fan of Cognitive Behavior Therapy and love to use the materials Dr. David Burns has provided. (Author of Feeling Good and more recently Feeling Great.) Having specific CBT techniques available can be helpful and sometimes you may just want to be heard and your anxiety may dissipate just from sharing.
