About My Clients
I have worked with people from diverse backgrounds seeking support for a wide range of issues: depression, anxiety, trauma, neurodiversity, relationship conflicts, and life changes, planned or unplanned. Many of my clients identify among LGBTQ+ populations, and some don't. I enjoy collaborating with individuals seeking growth. I am passionate about helping people discover that their life matters, that they matter, that it is possible to keep going despite the pain and even to experience joy.
My Background and Approach
The foundation of my approach is to create a safe, supportive environment for each individual and develop a plan based on what they need and want from therapy at that time. This happens "organically." It is interpersonal and grows out of the uniqueness of the relationship between that therapist and that patient. Sometimes, what is needed is to come up with tools or practices to provide immediate safety or relief, and that is what we'll do. When the situation allows, I encourage curiosity about oneself and others and how our experiences influence us. I believe in the healing power of corrective relationships with the therapist, of learning more about one's own inner workings, and of having someone who is willing to nonjudgmentally sit with a person when they are in distress. I strive to be accepting, genuine, warm, and most of all, empathic. I am quick to point out strengths and generally view "maladaptive" behaviors as attempts to cope with difficult circumstances and experiences.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
It is important to me to meet each person I work with where they are. That being said, social justice, in general, has been a passion of mine for most of my adult life. It's not always easy to keep topics perceived as political out of discussions, and I don't believe that is strictly necessary. Also, I have had the experience of growing up in an evangelical protestant Christian church. I have loved-ones who are still part of similar communities, and I make an effort to respect their beliefs. I also know what my journey was like to extract myself from that experience and have great compassion for myself and others in that situation. Whatever your beliefs, I believe that people do the best they can to find answers in ways that make sense. I'm not here to tell you what to believe, only to help you discover what is important to you.
