Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy, first developed in the 1980s by Marsha M. Linehan, to treat patients suffering from borderline personality disorder. Since then, DBT’s use has broadened and now it is regularly employed as part of a treatment plan for people struggling with behaviors or emotions they can't control. This can include eating disorders, substance abuse, self-harm, and more. DBT is a skills-based approach that focuses on helping people increase their emotional and cognitive control by learning the triggers that lead to unwanted behaviors. Once triggers are identified, DBT teaches coping skills that include mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. A therapist specializing in DBT will help you to enhance your own capabilities, improve your motivation, provide support in-the-moment, and better manage your own life with problem-solving strategies. Think this approach might work for you? Reach out to one of TherapyDen’s DBT specialists today.

Being human is often tough. Sometimes we lose our way and can feel stuck and overwhelmed. Sometimes we would like to change parts of our lives or ourselves but don’t know how. Therapy can be an empowering way to promote healing, growth, and wellness. Often, we initially seek treatment to address a specific concern and then begin to uncover other areas of our lives in which we want to make meaningful change. My goal is for this process to feel supportive, affirming, and appropriately challenging.

I work with adults who want to overcome or cope with difficult emotions, restore hope and confidence, repair or build relationships, create healthier patterns, or establish and maintain recovery. Are you seeking relief, insight, courage? Safe support? Skills for change? To slow down, shift priorities, speak up, or step out? Some come with ideas about what they want or need. Others don't. Some are just hurting, overwhelmed, at wits end, and don't know what to do next. Therapy works for both.

My clients are often asking themselves: Will it ever get better? What's wrong with me? Who am I? Is what happened to me violence? Will I ever make peace with my body? Why did my family keep this secret? Why can't I get over 'it'? They might be recovering from intimate partner violence, narcissistic abuse, disordered eating, emotionally immature parents, leaving high demand groups, DNA discoveries, adoption search/reunion, childhood trauma, perfectionism and shame. You don't have to do it alone.

Chances are, if you're reading this, you are already noticing there are behaviors or patterns in your life you think could be better, and think it could be helpful to talk to someone about them. Someone who's not a friend, parent, teacher, or co-worker; someone who is impartial, someone with nothing to gain from you going one way or another. Engaging in counseling is a brave choice, and I am here to give space to your burdens so that you can continue on your journey that much lighter.
