Ashley Cox (she/her/hers)

My background is mostly with child/adolescent and families, treating a range of traumatic/adverse experiences. I have worked at a Child Advocacy Center conducting forensic interviews and using trauma-focused evidenced based screenings and practices, such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I am passionate about helping clients understand their trauma responses, reframe negative beliefs, and reclaim control over their life events and future.

From undergraduate & graduate internships, to my present career, I have worked almost exclusively with child & adolescents. I gained immense knowledge working within school systems, advocacy centers, and agencies, and ensure all areas of life and development are considered in treatment plans. I believe in meeting each child & family where he/she/they may be, focusing on establishing a trusting relationship and safe space where we can educate, promote, and reinforce whole-brain thinking.

Helping others discover the ins and outs of their anger is key, and I strive to help all find the skills needed to more smoothly cope when faced with past, present, and potential triggers. I have helped many discover emotions masked by anger, while reinforcing existing & novel healthy coping skills to combat intense life moments. Not knowing why you're angry is frustrating enough, but together we can reduce & replace tantrums or avoidance responses.

When feeling stuck on how to move forward, being told what to do can seem helpful, but long-term change relies on intrinsic motivation and self-discovery. I use an MI approach to promote self-realization to achieve self-actualization. Together we can identify incongruencies keeping you stuck, promote positive self-view to ignite change, while acknowledging & reflecting upon the sometimes inevitable resistance to change. With MI, we can better follow the path to solutions that exist within.

My approach is rooted in CBT, using it as a foundation to discover what's causing our house of well-being to crumble. Thoughts, feelings, & behaviors are connected, so I use CBT to help clients discover & replace unhelpful behaviors that reinforce negative beliefs & feelings. I strive to show others we can't control emotional waves crashing upon us at times, but we can reframe our beliefs and control our choice to surf, not succumb to, those waves.

I am passionate about breaking the cycle of, "just forget about it and move on." I strive to educate & remove self-blame, & later support clients narration of significant events so they can rewrite their stories & take back control of their perceptions & responses to the world around them.
