“Say More About That” Show Notes: Episode #15 – Countertransference: what the heck is it and why it's super important in therapy

Jeff Guenther, MS, LPC on Jun 09, 2019 in Say More About That

Rochelle joins Jeff once again to tackle an important, and lesser discussed subject, countertransference. Countertransference is the projection of feelings from the therapist to the client. Sounds pretty basic, right? Well the tricky part about countertransference is that it's happening subconsciously and sometimes it's really subtle, which makes it hard to detect. And if it goes undetected then havoc may ensue. Jeff and Rochelle break it all down for you in this week's episode.

Jeff, a licensed therapist and the host of Say More About That, talks with Rochelle about countertransference.

This episode covers:

  • What exactly is countertransference and how can we explain it in plain english?
  • What is the difference between countertransference and transference?
  • How therapists can handle countertransference when in therapy.
  • Typical situations where countertransference can pop up.
  • The first times Jeff and Rochelle were forced to deal with their countertransference.
  • How Jeff and Rochelle handle it in their practice.
