About My Clients

Have you been bouncing from relationship to relationship repeating the same tired patterns over and over again? Do you feel like it’s impossible to find someone who’s a good match for you? You must be exhausted and burnt out on the dating scene. I get it. It’s bananas out there. Therapy can provide you insight into how to get out of this rut. I look forward to working together and helping you find clarity so that you can grow.

My Background and Approach

I have a background in family and couples work. I received my master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from the University of Southern California, and my bachelor’s degree in child and family development from San Diego State University. My therapeutic career started out at a crisis line here in Portland, where I mainly worked with people who were suffering from suicidal thoughts. I've lived in Portland since 2005 and the bulk of my work focuses on seeing couples and individuals. Many clients believe it is the therapist’s job to make them feel better. While feeling better may be the outcome of counseling, it is not always the case in every situation. My main role is to help you feel the emotion more clearly and to perhaps provide insight as to why it is surfacing so intensely. You and I will work collaboratively to develop the capacity to endure intense negative emotions. By doing this, you'll be able to reduce the tendency to react or take action against uncomfortable feelings.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe everyone should have access to affordable and quality mental healthcare. And that is why I save 25% of my sessions for clients that can only pay $40 per session. I support organizations that fight against mental health stigma and access issues across all genders, ethnicities and sexual orientations. While I can not claim to be an expert on racial and systemic oppression, I can promise you that I study the issue on a regular basis and challenge myself to look outside of my old belief systems. I am sex positive and kink friendly and I welcome clients that want to explore this side of themselves. Politically, I am left leaning and progressive. However, if you're not, I won't judge you. Promise. I love going to see my Blazers play during basketball season. I play video games but I'm really only good at games that Mario stars in. I'm married. I have a dog named Josh. And I don't have kids or plan to have any.

You've chosen a therapist and have your first appointment coming up. What exactly should you expect in the first few sessions?

A Beginners Guide to Therapy. Part 2: What to ask in the consult

One of the most important parts of a consultation is that it gives the client a chance to ask the therapist some questions. As the client, you should feel empowered to ask the therapist any questions you have, especially if getting the answers will help you to feel more comfortable talking to the counselor.
