“Say More About That” Show Notes: Episode #35 – The hardest parts of being a therapist

Jeff Guenther, MS, LPC on Oct 27, 2019 in Say More About That

Today, I talk to Julie Jeske, LPC, one of my best best buddies, about what we think are the hardest parts of being a therapist. We chat about what we struggle with the most, how we take care of ourselves when we don't feel like being a therapist, if our therapy style changes when we are personally going through a breakup and whether or not we are turned off by relationships because we witness all the hard stuff firsthand. We also tackle the age old question of whether or not therapists are crazy for doing this work. Lots of laughs. Lots of fun. A must listen.

Questions and topics I discuss with Julie in the episode:

  • What is the hardest part of being a therapist?
  • Do non-clients in your life expect you to solve their problems or be emotionally supportive just because you're a therapist?
  • How do you take care of yourself so that you don't feel exhausted in session?
  • What if you just don't feel like being a therapist on a day you're scheduled to see clients? Do you cancel them? Do you power through? Do you allow yourself to be in a bad mood? How does your therapy change when you feel exhausted?
  • What happens if you're going through a breakup and you're talking to clients about their relationships? Do you want to tell them all to just end the relationship because nothing ever lasts???
  • Are therapists crazy for doing the job they do?
  • Are you turned off by relationships and marriage being a couples counselor?
