“Say More About That” Show Notes: Episode #33 – Donald Trump is mentally ill. Let’s diagnose him.

Jeff Guenther, MS, LPC on Oct 12, 2019 in Say More About That

This week, I talk to my therapist buddy Kirk Shepard, LPC, about Donald Trump. We'll discuss why therapists don't really want to speak up about diagnosing Trump and why it kinda feels wrong to do that. We'll chat about what mental health issues we think he could qualify for, what some of his unhealthy patterns of thinking and behaving are, and if we can feel any compassion for him when thinking about the trauma that he may have endured as a kid. Also, what if the Donald Trump walked into your office for therapy? Would you give him therapy? Where would you even start?

Questions and topics I discuss with Melissa in the episode:

  • How have we been feeling about politics and Trump these days?
  • Why are we therapists weary to speak up about diagnosing Trump? Why does it feel gross to diagnose him?
  • What mental health issues do we think he could qualify for?
  • What are some of his unhealthy patterns of thinking and behaving?
  • Do you feel any compassion for him when thinking about the trauma that he may have endured as a kid?
  • What if the Donald Trump walked into your office for therapy? Would you give him therapy? Where would you even start?
