My Background and Approach
I approach the therapeutic journey from the perspective of a tour guide or a "helpful passenger" - you're in the driver's seat and I am along for the ride, offering suggestions or providing tools along the way. Ultimately, the journey is up to you; you will lead the therapeutic process with your goals of what you want to get out of our time together, and I'll try and keep us on track. Early in our first few sessions, we'll discuss what you'd like to accomplish in our sessions so that we have a roadmap, and we'll work together to help you reach those goals. I might suggest "homework" - short books, readings, journaling, worksheets, etc. to help illustrate a topic or a skill that might appeal to you, but you can decide if it's going to work for you. YOU are the expert of YOU, so you will determine what you need to succeed!
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe in the resilience of the human spirit, and that people are NOT broken. I also believe that, just as we have learned some healthy and unhealthy thoughts and behaviors, it is never too late to un-learn and re-learn new and effective thoughts and coping patterns. It just takes time and support, and that's where I can come in :) I also approach therapy from a supportive role, as a person who has also struggled with issues in life (parent's death, divorce, disordered eating, ugh - ADULTING!) and I like to share some tools and concepts that I've learned along the way that have helped me along my journey that might help you as well. I share some personal stories from time to time, not to make the session about me, but rather to illustrate how I've stumbled and what tools I've used to get back up again. And it's ok to laugh about this journey called life, too!
