About My Clients
Overwhelmed by the state of the world or feeling quite unsure of how to build the life you want? You're certainly not alone—and you do not have to figure it out all by yourself. I'm Will Abshier, LPC (they/them), a gay, nonbinary Southerner specializing in LGBTQ+ mental health, gender affirming care, mood disorders, and trauma. I draw from ACT, mindfulness, and solution-focused approaches to meet each of my clients with creativity and care. Let’s talk and see if we’re a good fit!
My Background and Approach
My specialty and training has grown from 5 years of experience serving our LGBTQ+ community in combination with my own lived experience. I strongly believe that effective therapy needs to be affirming, accessible & individualized. My approach is solution-focused, evidenced-based, and grounded in mindfulness. I use Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Behavioral Therapies (CBT & DBT). I guide folks to identify their authentic values and use those discover meaningful paths to a greater quality of life. I help folks learn to love the life they live & live the life the life they love. Throughout our lives we'll look up and find ourselves stuck, even suffering. It's not a punishment; in fact, our challenges are incredibly important to our growth. My hope for each of my clients is that I can provide perspective and pragmatic solutions to help you find yourself again. If you can't see your path forward, I'd be honored to find it with you!
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
My experiences as a queer Southerner has sensitized me to the inequities that run through our society. I've understood what it means to be vulnerable and isolated growing up queer in the South. Being raised Southern Baptist has taught me both the harm communities of faith can impact and the importance of connecting with life-affirming practices & community. Forming alliances with Black, Latine/@/x & BIPOC folks in my own life has illuminated the privilege I hold as a white person in the South and the inequities of racism at all levels of society. The collective impact of my experiences and identities formed in me a desire to provide affirming services that empower marginalized folks of all walks to live in their full autonomy. The experiences we share in therapy are deeply meaningful; as a feminist therapist, I prioritize the therapeutic relationship with special attention to power dynamics and liberation for all. It would be an honor to serve you!
