Psychodynamic theory and intervention rests on the belief that unconscious thoughts, feelings, and experiences inform one's thoughts and actions. This means that I approach counseling with the touchstone that one's individual history and experiences show up in counseling with me. This expansive approach of talk therapy supports the unfolding of how early and current relationships impact one's sense of self and wellbeing for longterm relief.
Trauma can happen repeatedly, or on a single occasion. Most adults have a history of at least one traumatic event: one in which the individual's way of seeing the world and sense of safety in it is compromised or diminished. Trauma-informed care is a collaborative, empowerment focused approach. Treating trauma typically encompasses determining and practicing coping skills, exploring the past or current trauma when the client is ready, and integrating history of trauma into one's life story.
Making changes takes time and effort. Harm reduction therapy meets people who use drugs or engage in any other behaviors “where they’re at." This is a social justice principle focused on reducing shame and helping people make changes they are motivated to make. For one person this might finding ways to engage in behaviors in attainable, safer ways, while for another person this might mean complete abstinence from a substance, thought, or behavior.
