About My Clients
I work with a wide-array of clients, but most fall into one large category; the socially excluded. Anyone who struggles with being accepted and/or accepting themselves will always find a safe space with me! Nothing is judged, in fact, we'll find ways to incorporate all aspects of yourself into your world. I work with gamers, cosplayers, nerdoms, fandoms, LGBTQ+, polyamory, fetishists, and those in the kink community to name just a few.
My Background and Approach
I started in the mental health field doing addiction recovery work in 1990. Since then I have worked through so many types of mental health approaches and venues I'm not sure I can name them all. I waited until my midlife crisis to get my LPC, but found that the mindfulness practices I have used for so many years had finally found their way into the mental health field. This thrills me to no end and I utilize a great deal of mindfulness with my clients, both in sessions and for homework. I also use some CBT to help left brained clients get more comfortable with the mindfulness pieces. I love it when neuropsychology is woven into the more abstract nature of the human entity, or as I like to call it, "When the science meets the woo".
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
In addition to my private practice at Side Quest Therapy, I am the Director of Operations at Capital Area Counseling where I also do pro bono work. I provide supervision to pre-graduate interns and help them find their own version of therapy. I strongly believe in authenticity in therapy!! I have been known to make some people uncomfortable with my therapeutic approach, so if you are looking for someone who fits a white male therapist stereotype, you won't like me. I can promise you that I will be attentive, caring, and absolutely inclusive, as well as promise you that I will be kicking my shoes off, spreading out on the couch, and getting comfy. I am extremely laid back, and it is very difficult to ruffle my feathers. I am also a Reiki practitioner and doing energy work. The way the physical world works off energy is so connected to the way energy works in the spiritual plane. This is definitely one of the places where the science meets the woo.
