People pleasing, over-responsibility, perfectionism, being everyone's emotional backbone are all common, almost normal every day experiences for the unofficial therapist. People run to the unofficial therapist to vent, for problem solving, and the unofficial therapist always feels ready to give. And yet this feels stressful, heavy, burdensome, and the boundaries feel selfish - feelings we feel we shouldn't have.
My Background and Approach
Being a child of Vietnamese immigrants, trauma and high achieving go hand in hand for me. I myself am a recovering unofficial therapist and had to learn that boundaries did not mean defying my culture or dishonoring my parents. And my choices does not mean I'm disrespecting my parents. Through an IFS-informed EMDR approach, I help other unofficial therapists move toward recognizing their needs matter, boundaries are not selfish, and that they are more than being the unofficial therapist and can rediscover who they are beyond everyone else's needs.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that all parts of you matter, even parts of you that you might feel ashamed of, hate, find annoying. I believe my clients can move toward feeling confident in who they are, experience groundedness in their decision making, and experience an alignment within themselves that gives all parts of themselves the space to breathe.
