This group is for adults who feel things intensely - anger, anxiety, hurt - and for anyone whose impulses move faster than their judgment, and who finds that their reactivity and overwhelm are costing them at work or at home. You don't need a diagnosis to belong here; you need the sense that your emotions are running you instead of the other way around.
We meet weekly on Sundays for 90 minutes in downtown Chicago. Each session teaches a skill from one of DBT's four modules:
Mindfulness: observe a feeling or an urge without judging it or acting on it. Every other skill starts here.
Emotion regulation: understand what an emotion is doing, decrease reactivity, and change an emotion by acting opposite to its urge.
Distress tolerance: survive the spike without making it worse; skills for the moment when nothing can be fixed and every option you can think of is a bad one.
Interpersonal effectiveness: ask for what you want and need, say no, and handle conflict while keeping your self-respect, and end relationships that no longer work.
You practice each skill between sessions, so it moves into your actual life.
The benefits/What changes:
You react less and choose more
Calm you get on purpose, even mid-crisis
You say the hard thing - and the relationship gets stronger, not worse
You stop fighting yourself: accept who you are and change what isn't working at the same time.
A room of people working on the same thing, motivating, not embarrassing
