My Personal Beliefs and Interests
According to the research on teen mothers and higher education, the statistics are as follows: “Only about 50% of teen mothers receive a high school diploma by age 22” and “Only 2% of teenage mothers complete a college degree before the age of 30”. Being aware of these statistics is important because I got pregnant at age 17 and managed to reach my goal of higher education. Therefore, I am proud to say I have beaten the odds by completing a master’s degree. Facing motherhood at an early age was a significant life event that forced me to take responsibility, commit to sacrificing for my family, and develop my determination to achieve my goal of financial stability. A study by Hernandez and Robia (2017) discussed the factors that contributed to teen mothers’ academic success as young mothers. Reading this study made me reflect on my own experience. I want to continue leading by example and I want my children to learn that if mom can do it, they can do it too.
