About My Clients

You may be grieving a loss, coping with a new diagnosis, or burning out from caregiving responsibilities. You may feel lonely, disengaged, overwhelmed, or numb. Just like you, my clients want renewed mental wellness, meaningful connection, and a clearer sense of purpose as they move through difficult circumstances they do not like and did not choose. They want someone to help them navigate loss and change and get back to feeling like themselves. I'm here to help you find a new direction.

My Background and Approach

I'm a board-certified geropsychologist with over a decade of experience helping people with complex medical and mental health concerns cope with difficult problems. With my LGBTQ-affirmative approach, I focus on creating a therapeutic relationship that affirms YOUR identities - recognizing the strengths and uniqueness that you bring as an LGBTQ+ person. I am mindful of the ways stigma, political oppression and discrimination impact the mental health of my clients, and seek to build on the resilience, strengths, and self-knowledge that you have developed. What we think about, what we do, and how we feel are all related. I use this framework to guide my work with clients. In psychotherapy sessions, we will identify unhelpful patterns of avoidance and inflexibility, and work together to change how you relate to unwanted, painful experiences. I focus on what matters most to you, what you value, and how this translates into actions you can take to get back to what matters most to you.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe everyone can benefit from counseling at some point in life, and change is possible at any age. Looking for support is a profound way to care for yourself. LGBTQ+ aging has been a passion for me over my career, and I dedicate my practice to serving older members of our community. I trust that as an LGBTQ+ person, you have gotten this far by having unique strengths, and we can build on that even if your current situation is new and overwhelming. The medical and mental health professions have done harm to LGBTQ+ people in the past. I embrace the Companionship Model in gender-affirming care, trusting people to know themselves best. I work to decolonize my work such that I "partner with" my clients and strive to recognize harmful remnants of racist, transphobic, and heteronormative ideas when they surface. As a White cis gay man, I always welcome open discussion of differences, with the goal of building a trusting therapeutic relationship.
