About My Clients
Are you struggling to find your place in the world? Do you feel self-doubt, hopeless, and on-edge? Is that anxious voice inside your head telling you that everyone else has it "figured out"? You feel like you're not good enough. I know how heavy, frightening, and isolating that can feel. I work with young adults and adolescents to recognize their strengths from within and free themselves of those worries. This helps to improve relationships, mood, and create clear goals for the future.
My Background and Approach
Based on your specific needs, I pull from a few types of strategies to help you improve your life. I have a big set of tools in my toolbox that help to tolerate distress in the moment, communicate effectively with others, live mindfully in the present, challenge negative thoughts, focus on reality versus anxious "what ifs" about the future, and increase confidence to utilize these tools. I find it important to focus on what IS in your control as that is where we can make changes. We can work together to problem solve as well as accept some of life's difficulties to improve your way of approaching challenges. We will work together to identify alternatives to negative coping strategies such as procrastination, social withdrawal, or thoughts of self-harm. We will collaborate in a safe environment, and most importantly, work towards creating a life you want to live. You will gain resilience and have an added sense of "yes, I CAN do this" as you face life's difficulties.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe everyone comes to therapy with a set of strengths, skills, and hope, even if they feel like they are completely depleted of these things. I have seen other young people have that "ah-ha" moment of recognizing their own agency in making changes in their lives and it is what keeps me motivated to work through the hard stuff. I have previous experience working at a domestic violence agency, so I am also aware of the direct effects on any family members experiencing verbal, emotional, or physical abuse and neglect. This experience is what led me to obtain more education in social work. I fight for my clients' rights to feel exactly what they feel and take up as much as space as they need. For my clients in therapy, there is no "wrong way" to do therapy to make personal growth. I advocate for all clients to be heard within their families, classrooms, jobs, friendships, etc. I also work to demystify the therapeutic process and make mental health care more accessible.
