About My Clients
I have two main areas of focus; anxiety disorders and mood disorders. I work with a wide age range but specialize in working with individuals in their late teens or early 20's that have just been diagnosed with a mood disorder or anxiety. I have experience working with Bipolar Disorder, GAD, OCD, and Depression. Having a diagnosis shouldn't stop you from pursuing your goals. I want to help you navigate your way to managing your illness so that you can continue succeeding and doing what you love.
My Background and Approach
I have been trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution Focused Therapy. I have experience in offering both individual and group sessions. I have worked in acute settings and outpatient settings, so I am confident and comfortable treating complex cases. In some cases there are people that don't respond to traditional medications, perhaps you have heard the term "treatment refractory" which means treatment resistant. It can be challenging when medications just aren't working. Whether you are successful with medication or you are not I want to help you to maximize your strengths. I believe that regardless of your diagnosis you have specific strengths. By harnessing your strengths my goal is to help you to get the most of life you can. This is a team effort. You have to want this as much if not more than I do. If you are willing to fight then I will be right there with you; supporting you and offering guidance.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
As someone that lives with a mental illness I am again and again frustrated by the misconceptions and bias. I will always do my best to approach therapy with an open mind. I believe that you know your illness, your culture, and yourself better than anyone else. I ask that you be patient and teach me. I don't want to assume anything because I feel that our assumptions are often the root of our ignorance. Some believe that chronic mental health conditions can be cured. I do not. I believe that chronic mental health conditions can be managed and controlled just like any other chronic condition such as diabetes. I don't want to discount the work that you are putting in even once you have left therapy to maintain your mental health. I volunteer on the Crisis Text Line. I have volunteered with youth programs, homeless shelters, disability workshops, and veteran programs. I worked in a clinic for substance abuse. Advocacy, inclusivity, and giving back are important to me.
