About My Clients

I've been privileged to work with diverse clients, but I most commonly see young adults who are dealing with depression, anxiety, low self-worth, porn addictions, relationship issues, and life transitions (divorce, grief and loss, job loss, etc.). While that population is most common for me, I do enjoy working with nearly anyone who is motivated to grow and improve. The most successful clients are those who are willing to be honest about where they are, so that we can take the appropriate steps.

My Background and Approach

I earned my doctorate from Northwest University, but despite my credentials, I tend to use a collaborative approach. I assume that you are the expert on your life, and I want to hear and understand your story as much as I can. I tend to use a combination of experiential techniques and education. I might tell you something about how our minds work, or the role of emotions, or tricks related to memory, and then we'll work together to see how best to implement that information into your specific situation, and practice doing so in the session. My main models of therapy are emotion-focused and Cognitive behavioral, meaning we'll spend time considering both your thoughts and your emotions, because they influence each other as well as your overall sense of wellbeing. I see myself not as the surgeon who is going to cure you while you sit passively by, but more as the personal trainer who is going to teach you the exercises and techniques to use, and then help you practice them in session.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I come from a Christian background and while that does inform my own sense of values and to an extent, my picture of health, I also recognize that not everyone shares my perspective. I firmly believe that therapy is only useful to the extent that we are working toward your own goals, and I do not try to impose my values on my clients. As it happens, most of the work I've done with people has been around issues that are not directly related to matters of faith anyway, but in some case the work we've done has involved exploring what people believe and why, and how that fits into their picture of health.
