About My Clients

My ideal client is 5-13 years with issues related to abuse, family conflict, and managing emotions. I can also help adults cope with single-parenting, relationship, and other stressors.

My Background and Approach

I’ve worked in mental health since 1979. I believe that everybody has the capacity for growth and change. My goal is to help clients use their strengths and unique qualities to find solutions to problems, improve their relationships, build confidence, and develop a healthy sense of self. Successful in-depth therapy depends on the growth and development of a collaborative relationship with your therapist, which supports you becoming aware of the formative aspects of your life not only intellectually but emotionally. We make significant progress in therapy when given the opportunity to talk openly in an atmosphere of inquisitiveness, freedom, caring, and acceptance. When we speak honestly, addressing our life histories and looking with courage at our life dilemmas - we improve our chances of living a satisfying and fulfilling life. My work is Psychodynamic in nature, and informed by Existential theory. This includes talk and play as a way to help clients process their issues.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

In my community, I have served as a news reporter for AshevilleFM, an all-volunteer local radio station, volunteered with WNC Health Advocates, fostered numerous dogs from the Asheville Humane Society to prepare them for adoption, and volunteered on hotlines and with crisis centers. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the Asheville Poverty Initiative. I support folks in an effort to further create an equitable and just community and society. I have stood with people to support various issues that have been in the national spotlight, as well as those in our smaller community. I find value in each person and strive to be the kind of person Mr. Rogers would be proud of.
