About My Clients
I specialize in working with children, teens, adults and families. I do some couple's work and group therapy. I work with clients who have mood and behavioral disorders, particularly anxiety, depression, bipolar, and child and adult adhd. I also work with those recovering from trauma and dysfunctional family issues, whether as result of abuse, alcohol or mental health issues in the family.
My Background and Approach
Prior to becoming an outpatient counselor I worked as a social worker in residential treatment for children and teens, and as a school counselor for K-12 youth. I have been extensively trained in Internal Family Systems Therapy(IFS) and it is the primary lense that informs my approach. With children and teens, and adults when requested, I use play therapy and creative modalities. I am also trained in multiple other approaches including CBT, DBT, ACT and Solution Focused to name a few. I work collaboratively with each client to tailor a treatment plan and approach. I believe each client has the resources and wisdom within to heal and to become their best self, and feel honored to be a facilitator of that healing. Also, with consent, I will work with other providers involved in the clients life-teachers, coaches, social workers and medical professionals to coordinate care.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I have a strong spiritual orientation that informs my values and beliefs. Although I was raised Catholic, I have been a part of the United Church of Christ for over 30 years. I identify as christian, however, I embrace that there are multiple spiritual paths and all have something to contribute to our understanding of ourselves, and our role in the world. I am comfortable working with clients from any faith perspective, and from any sexual orientation. I am married to a black man for 30 years, and my children are mixed race. My husband and I have also been foster parents, and caregivers for a number of family members over the years. I am well acquainted with grief having lost parents, siblings, a child, and dear friends. These life experiences assist me in having deep compassion for the pain and suffering of others.
