About My Clients

Do you ever find that, even when you know something is true, you can't help but feel otherwise? There are forces in our lives and in the world that feed anxiety, depression, or trauma. I have found that I especially enjoy helping people shift perceptions so that problems don't have so much power. In working with relationships, this means helping facilitate safe, vulnerable connections between partners. In Individual therapy, it means identifying and highlighting a client's innate goodness.

My Background and Approach

My goal is to be genuine with the people I work with. Rather than being who I think a therapist should be, I try to be myself with clients. In therapy, there are a few theories I tend to operate from. In my work with individuals, I primarily use Solution-Focused interventions as well as Experiential therapy. The Solution-Focused approach allows us to highlight your known strengths as well as shift perceptions in more helpful directions. Experiential interventions bring the focus to the here and now, encouraging people to process vulnerable emotions which are often covered up by surface-level emotions. In my work with couples, I have enjoyed Emotionally-Focused Therapy. This model focuses on creating an emotional safe haven between partners, which allows for the creation of more positive communication cycles.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

The reason I became a therapist is that I want to help people. Life is hard, and it's hard in different ways for everyone. Some people have a known diagnosis that they are working on maintaining. Sometimes people aren't quite sure why they want to come to therapy, but they know they aren't feeling great. Other times, people just want to focus on maintaining their mental health with regular check-ins. I believe that everyone deserves therapy. As far as I'm concerned, normality is a myth and my clients are the experts on their lives. My main goal is that the people I work with are happy, healthy, and safe. What this looks like may not be the same for every individual or couple I work with. My life has been informed by my identities, such as being a white, straight, cis gendered, husband, father, brother, son, and therapist. I am continuously working toward recognizing my privilege and understanding how these layers play a role in my work.
