About My Clients

My clients are often first responders, military, veterans, and healthcare professionals dealing with PTSD, anger, anxiety, grief, burnout, or suicidal thoughts. Some shut down, avoid, overwork, or stay constantly on guard. These responses often developed for a reason. I also work with those that have experienced traumatic events, facing serious or terminal illness, end-of-life concerns, or anyone who values having a therapist with a critical care medical background.

My Background and Approach

Before becoming a therapist, I spent more than two decades as a 911 paramedic, tactical paramedic, flight paramedic, and critical care/flight nurse. That background shapes how I understand trauma, high-stress professions, serious illness, death, and mass-casualty events, not just clinically, but within the cultures where compartmentalization, dark humor, emotional control, and pushing through often serve a purpose. My style is direct, candid, and infused with humor. I use an integrative approach, drawing heavily from EMDR, DBT, Trauma-Focused CBT, strengths-based and existential approaches. I believe therapy should recognize the difference between what helped you survive, function, or do your job and what continues to serve you now. With couples, I incorporate Gottman Method interventions to address communication, conflict, connection, and the patterns that keep couples stuck.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

There is very little you can say in my office that will shock me. I’ve spent much of my life around people on some of their worst days, and I believe there should be room to say the things that are difficult, uncomfortable, messy, or hard to admit. You don’t have to make your story sound better before you tell it. I am a loud and active advocate for first responders, military, veterans, and healthcare professionals. I regularly speak and teach about first responder culture, trauma, and the gap that can exist between these professions and mental health care. I care deeply about getting that part right. I value accountability without judgment, humor without minimizing, and understanding why someone learned to operate the way they do before deciding what needs to change. I consider it a great honor when someone trusts me enough to tell me the parts of their story they may have never said out loud and allows me to walk alongside them as they figure out what comes next.
