About My Clients
Maternal Mental Health is often overlooked in most women, but research has gathered evidence that Women of Color have been most affected by the lack of quality of treatment in maternal care. Women of Color are 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy complications compared to our White counterparts. Women of Color are 3 times more likely to experience Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders. In 2020, the rates of severe maternal morbidity was 63% higher in Black communities than White communities.
My Background and Approach
I am trained in perinatal mental health from PSI (Postpartum Support International) and an advocate and supporter of Black Perinatal Mental Health. I’ve had quite the experience with my clinical training ranging from residential inpatient hospitalization working with adolescent females, crisis stabilization treating children and adolescents, and university counseling working with college students. It has been a pleasure to serve the community in many different aspects and diverse clinical settings, but after understanding the racial disparity in maternal care for Women of Color, it has been a true passion to break the silence for reproductive racism. One of my favorite quotes is from Jabina Coleman, LSW, MSW, CLC, IBCLC, “Everyone wants to hold the baby, who will hold the Mother.” My mission to make perinatal mental health a priority.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe pregnancy is a vulnerable time for Moms and families and that all concerns regardless or race or ethnicity should be taken seriously. It is my mission to dismantle racial disparities in black pregnancies and to bring awareness to the mortality rates and infant deaths among the BIPOC community.
