About My Clients
For many people, challenges can feel overwhelming or like they “don’t make sense." Often its embarrassing – or even baffling! - to realize that life and feelings have gotten messy or out of control. You’re not alone –many of us have been where you are! My clients come from all walks of life: college students to moms to CEOs. Some are overwhelmed by depression or anxiety. Others have work-life balance ughs. Some are struggling to navigate life changes.
My Background and Approach
After earning a degree in Psychology, with a dual emphasis in experimental psychology and childhood psychopathology, I completed my graduate degree at Philips Graduate University, a Family Systems-oriented institution in Southern California. My early training was heavily influenced by psychoanalytic and cognitive behavioral theories, as viewed through the lens of developmental psychology. Since then, I’ve integrated many other therapeutic forms. I've been a licensed therapist, treating mostly individual adults, since 1994. But education is only a small part of anyone’s journey! I’ve also been a musician, ski instructor, social worker, business owner, university professor, and a behavioral health executive. I’ve been involved in both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, some very small, some very large. Currently, I call the mountains west of Fort Collins, Colorado home and live part time in Taos, New Mexico.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that we into grow into adulthood from our earliest roots - sometimes those roots are solid, and sometimes they aren’t. Often when challenges and feelings “don’t make sense” there is an old rotten root causing problems. Those problems can show up in our relationships, work, or even in our hobbies or health. Sometimes they give rise to addictions. To understand someone in the present requires a therapist to understand that person's past. But, “good” therapy goes beyond insight. Therapy should challenge the individual to take action in the present, despite their past. The therapy I provide is based on several schools of thought about change, but it is always distinctly client-centered, trauma-informed, and resiliency-oriented.
