My Background and Approach
There is no single approach to helping all people with all types of trauma. There are a number of evidenced based approaches that can be tailored to your unique experiences. I am trained and experienced in a variety of approaches that range from dealing with how you think about it to managing how your body involuntarily responds to triggers. Did you know that some approaches don't require you to tell and relive every detail of the event? We will work collaboratively, at your pace, to develop a plan that helps you get where you want to be. I'll teach you the skills to manage anxiety and triggers, and to shed that self blame and criticism. Not only will you learn how to better manage your response to this event, you'll learn how to be resilient to future challenges and stressors.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I have two core beliefs about our reactions to trauma: 1) it serves a function and 2) it isn't just emotional. Whether you "check out" a lot, don't communicate well with others, often feel angry, or have outbursts, I know there is a reasonable explanation. While some of those behaviors don't serve you well in your current life, they did help you adapt and survive at some point in your life. This is why I don't have negative judgements about what others perceive as negative behavior. Since your body and mind function as one, it isn't just an emotional or mental issue. People who've survived traumatic experiences are more likely to have chronic health and disease issues. You can't really have a healthy body without a healthy brain. The good news is you are endowed with the ability to heal your mind just like your body; they just need a little help now and then.
