About My Clients
In the context of a warm accepting therapeutic environment, I help youth and adults develop skills and strategies to manage and reduce symptomatology. Self-expression, self-confidence, and self-efficacy are strong foci in this therapeutic work. I work with clients who are questioning and coming to acceptance of their sexual orientation and gender identity and those navigating the decision to come out to family and others, and with parents working toward acceptance of their children.
My Background and Approach
The work we will do together will have a strong skill building approach. Drawing from diverse cognitive behavioral therapeutic approaches, skills focus on managing emotions and behaviors and improving interpersonal interactions. The key feature is working toward integrating these new skills and strategies into everyday thoughts and actions to reduce distress. Each client is an individual and each treatment plan is individualized.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
My personal focus on the health and integrity of people, animals, and the environment led to a career detour into Humane Education between graduate school and clinical practice. The goals of Humane Education are to equip learners with tools for critical thinking and developing solutions to foster human rights, animal protection, and environmental ethics. I bring this strong social justice orientation to my clinical work. Enhancing personal dignity and personal growth to support compassion, respect, and empathy not only for oneself but also for others with whom we share the environment and the environment itself is one of my guiding principles. I continue to teach courses on Humane Education and Animal Assisted Interactions in post-baccalaureate programs. I also drive transport legs to bring animals to shelters to improve adoption chances and foster animals in my home. I hope one day to have an animal companion who would like to assist me in my therapeutic work.
