My Background and Approach
Throughout my career in counseling I adopted counseling approaches derived from Family Systems, Psychoanalytical, Existential, Cognitive Behavior, and Play Therapy. My area of specialization is with individuals, families and children ages 13 to adulthood. The family systems approach focuses on the treatment of family rather than individuals as the catalyst for change. My philosophy is founded on the premise that change is created within relationships in the family structure. Utilizing the view of the client’s culture including their physical and social influences, I define family as anyone who may be enabling the problem to continue or who may be a resource for resolving it.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that people can make better decisions if they have enough information and understanding about how something works. Counseling includes your active involvement as well as efforts to change your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. You will have to work both in and out of the counseling sessions. There is no "magic pill", but instead there will be homework assignments, exercises, writing and journal and involvement in support groups. Most likely, you will have to work on relationships and make long-term efforts. Sometimes change will be easy and swift, but more often it will be slow and deliberate; effort may need to be repeated. Abstinence from mood-altering chemicals, family involvement, and an improved lifestyle is an expected goal.
