About My Clients
Most of my clients are navigating a life transition — starting college, becoming a mom, or finding their footing as a young adult, often with anxiety, depression, burnout, or identity questions. I have a special heart for students, new and expecting moms, and Asian American women — you won't have to explain the cultural context here. Family expectations, the stigma of asking for help, intergenerational dynamics: already understood. All sessions are online, anywhere in Illinois.
My Background and Approach
I'm Sarah Cheung, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and founder of SonderGrace Counseling PLLC. Before starting my practice, I spent six years as a counselor at a diverse urban school and taught graduate counseling students — so I know the student world from the inside. My approach is warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. Therapy works best when you feel understood, not analyzed. The name SonderGrace reflects that: sonder, the idea that every person is the protagonist of their own vivid, complex story; grace, unconditional acceptance and space to heal and grow. I help clients navigate life transitions — starting college, becoming a parent, or stepping into adulthood. Together we'll make sense of what's happening, build practical tools for the hard days, and move toward the life you want. All sessions are telehealth across Illinois — no commute, no waiting room.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe every person has inherent worth — that each of us is the protagonist of our own vivid, complex story, deserving of grace: unconditional acceptance and room to heal and grow. I believe healing happens in relationship. Being truly seen and understood — especially in the parts of ourselves shaped by culture and family — is where change begins. I believe our cultural backgrounds aren't obstacles to work around but contexts to honor. The family expectations, values, and histories we carry shape us deeply, and therapy should make room for all of it rather than asking anyone to leave pieces of themselves at the door. And I believe growth is always possible. No matter how stuck things feel, people can move toward lives with more clarity, steadiness, and self-compassion — often with the right support at the right time.
