About My Clients
What makes me most excited about my work is getting to the heart of the matter - what is in our control, and what is not. I find the people who are drawn to work with me are willing to explore their spiritual principals, values, and strengths...and are not afraid to work! Don't worry if you are not hopeful or courageous or good-looking or good at relationships now - that is all workable! I LOVE to work with people with addiction/recovery concerns, wise elders, and veterans. If not now, when?
My Background and Approach
I came to my chosen path late in life, so I have picked up many hard-won practices over the years that worked for many others as well as myself. It is important to note, however, that I don't have all the answers. My way is NOT the only way - in fact, my experience has shown me that people are the experts on themselves, and there are as many "right" ways as there are individuals. What I am really good at, and the approach that I most enjoy, is to learn what works and what doesn't...for YOU. The focus of my education and experience has been strengths-based, person-centered, and culturally grounded generalist social work and addictions counseling. I've worked with people on the full spectrum of the socio-economic scale in the U.S. (homeless-millionaire), & people from diverse backgrounds for the last twenty years. As a result, I have a profound respect for individual preferences, choices, circumstances, and spiritual paths, and I believe there is Limitless Potential in every chosen path.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe in the dignity of self-determination. I believe in the value of questioning where our beliefs came from, and choosing new beliefs if necessary to thrive. I value the courage and strength it takes to be vulnerable enough to ask for help. I value a good listener (and hope to always be one). I value excellence in all of its forms, and generosity. I believe we love who and what we love for a good reason, and no love is wrong. I believe there is a Plan, and I don't have to know what it is to carry it out perfectly. I value honesty, and I believe when people are not honest with me there may be something I need to change. I believe we all have equal "rights" to happiness, wholeness, health (and good healthcare), education/learning, housing, community/belonging, choice of our spiritual or religious path, free speech, and loving who and how we love. I also believe we are responsible to others, the environment, and our own higher purpose. We are both sovereign and in each other's care.
