About My Clients
My clients are thoughtful, compassionate individuals often impacted by trauma, ADHD, and LGBTQ+ experiences. Many struggle with emotional regulation and distress tolerance stemming from family or social challenges. They’re deep thinkers who care deeply about others and seek therapy to heal, grow, and build more balanced, fulfilling lives.
My Background and Approach
Rita Mahon, LICSW, is a Rhode Island–based therapist specializing in anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, and relationship challenges. She integrates DBT, CBT, and EMDR to help clients understand the link between thoughts, emotions, and behavior while building practical coping skills. Compassionate and collaborative, Rita creates a safe, nonjudgmental space for healing and personal growth. With over 18 years of experience and a focus on evidence-based care, she offers flexible telehealth sessions that make therapy accessible and effective for adolescents, adults, and couples.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe therapy should honor the full complexity of each person's identity, experience, and story. My work is grounded in intersectional and feminist values, recognizing how systems of power, privilege, and oppression shape our mental health and sense of self. I believe Black Lives Matter, and I'm committed to providing care that affirms LGBTQ+ identities, celebrates diversity, and upholds equity and inclusion. Everyone deserves the right to free expression and personal truth, provided it is not used to harm or silence others. Outside of therapy, I find balance through time in nature and strength training, which helps me stay grounded and connected to the body–mind relationship I encourage in my clients. I view mental health as a personal journey, one that requires respect for individuality, collaboration, and flexibility. No single approach fits all; therapy must be tailored to each person's unique needs, strengths, and goals. Healing happens when people feel safe and heard.
