About My Clients
Do you often feel out of place, invisible, unheard, or misunderstood? Do you sometimes feel flat, empty, as if life has no meaning? As your therapist, it's important to me that you feel seen and understood. I have extensive experience with adolescents, adults, and first responders, and I believe that no matter where you are in your journey of life, you don't have to travel alone.
My Background and Approach
My approach and philosophy in therapy come from years of personal experience and my past career as a teacher. In my twenties, I indulged an urban wanderlust, living in cities around the world: Sheffield UK, Amsterdam NL, Taipei City TW, Los Angeles and San Francisco. In my thirties I was an adjunct English teacher and professor, teaching writing, composition, and language to all ages, but primarily at the college level in San Francisco. My therapy today is informed by the worldliness of my life experience. No matter where I went, no matter what culture I was immersed in, no matter what age I taught, there we all were, people living with the same patterns of love, joy and happiness, and the same struggles of loneliness, emotional pain, shame, and trauma. My approach is strength-based, person-centered, and exploratory. Our path through therapy will be as winding as the roads you've walked in your life.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that one of the most devastating consequences of depression, anxiety, grief and trauma, is isolation. I believe that this feeling of loneliness is pervasive in society, or as the legendary Sting once sang: "It seems I'm not alone at being alone / A hundred billion castaways looking for a home." I believe that inequity is abundant in life, but so too is hope, meaning and purpose. Most importantly I believe that everyone deserves company on this journey. And I don't think we have to search for and create meaning and hope in a lonely void. We can do these things together, digging through the past and present for the patterns and narratives that inform the future.
