Sometimes we lose touch with ourselves as a result of our traumas, or simply as a result of never having felt welcome in the fullness of who we are. Maybe everything feels hard. Or you struggle to stay motivated. Or your relationships feel unsatisfying, or you feel like an alien. Maybe the past haunts you, and the present feels overwhelming. You may be grieving a loss or facing a transition. But emotional pain doesn't mean something is intrinsically wrong with you.
My Background and Approach
Background: I have an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Regis University in Denver, Colorado.... Approach: As a depth therapist, I believe that working with the unconscious is a powerful route to growth. Within this framework, I integrate a variety of approaches. We may explore your history, work with your dreams, do trauma-informed somatic work, re-imagine your story arc, or examine relational patterns as they unfold between us. I might pause you to ask what's happening inside as you speak--where in your body are you feeling the energy?
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I have always been interested in people's lived experiences of the world. But for much of my life I avoided what might have been my natural calling. For one thing, I was deeply uncomfortable with the gender assumptions seemed to be baked into psychology and psychoanalysis back when I was in college. An ongoing evolution in this area has made it possible for me embrace the profession.... I was also uncomfortable with what I perceived as a tendency to understand experience through labels or categories (e.g., "anxiety," "depression," "ADHD").... Categories are paradoxical. They can help us recognize and honor patterns of experience and thus can empower us. They can also come between us and a felt knowledge of ourselves. Over the years, I have learned to hold this paradox more lightly in my personal life, and I bring that flexibility to the practice of psychotherapy.
