Anyone raised in a family with dysfunction, primarily addiction, likely has a tendency towards codependency. More specifically, people that tend to put the needs of others ahead of their own self-care, consequently, are negatively impacted and may be suffering with codependency. Getting support and learning to identify your needs, as well as how to address them is key to better relationships and an overall, healthier life.

Many people are challenged to see when they have crossed over the invisible line of alcoholism. No one can make another person stop drinking or help them cut down. Each person is on their own journey in understanding if/when their drinking has become a problem. I have years of experience in supporting people in their goals around drinking, especially those who want to stop completely. My belief is that alcoholism is not something that can be cured but eradicated with 12 Step recovery.

Each person comes to therapy in a unique stage of change. My goal is to seek to understand where clients are at in their stage of change, and support them in fulfilling those goals.

At first session, I ask clients what their relationship goals are. I make it quite clear that if both are not committed to taking steps to make the relationship work, counseling will not be beneficial. I do ask to meet with each person individually, after the first session, to better understand the relationship and life history prior. My approach tends to be both emotion-focused, as well as solution-focused. I communicate my no-secrets policy prior to therapy starting.

I have over 10 years of experience working with addicts, alcoholics, and their loved ones. I do believe that addiction is a medical diagnosis and a progressive disease that hijacks the brain. Each person impacted by addiction needs support, and understanding that there is no cure, as well has how to keep the focus on their own recovery. My modality has a strong emphasis on 12-Step recovery, as it tends to have the best outcomes.
