About My Clients
Culture trains us to doubt the felt experience in our bodies, minds, and spirits. I want you to recover your sense of knowing. I want you to have an embodied sense of intuition and self-belief so that you can flourish. I believe anxiety, depression, trauma, and systems of oppression all interfere with your personal ability to thrive. I want you to be empowered with tools of liberation, so you can be free to listen to your inner wisdom.
My Background and Approach
Some of the tools I use are metaphor, story-telling, spirituality, humor, and cognitive restructuring, in a safe space we create together. I am comfortable with a variety of approaches and believe that therapy should be as unique as you are. I studied for my degree at The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology, and since then have gained experience in evidence-based treatments, including cognitive behavior therapy. I often take a psychodynamic approach with my clients, meaning that we spend time exploring your feelings about your early experiences to inform us about your current situation.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
Audre Lorde, self-ascribed "Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet," wrote, "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” I believe that the United States and many dominant cultures are rampant with what I would call "systemic narcissism." Even though individuals may not be struggling with diagnosable narcissism, symptoms of its impact show up in everyday life of everyday people. Caring for ourselves - in all our goodness - has not and will not be easier over time, unless we make it so. But unless everyone has access to that care, including mental health care, our communities and culture will not heal in the ways we desperately need. And still. I have persistent, tenacious hope that healing is possible.
