About My Clients
I work with adolescents and adults. Areas of focus include anxiety, depression, trauma, self worth, eating disorders, LGBTQ issues, and perfectionism. Adolescents and young folks navigating their path towards adulthood. High achievers struggling with rigid expectations and feelings of being "not good enough" in spite of their many accomplishments. Folks grappling with big transitions or feeling stuck in unhealthy patterns. Adults still hurting from painful childhood events.
My Background and Approach
In my 20 years of clinical experience, I’ve learned that therapy is really about recovering, nurturing and healing the relationship with the self. As an attachment-based therapist, this is my essential focus. Therapy begins with building a trusting relationship where curiosity and self reflection are encouraged. We then move on to exploring specific life circumstances and challenges. From a foundation of safety and acceptance, healing and growth are possible. I earned my Masters of Social Work from Florida State University in 2006. I am fully licensed in the state of Texas and trained in several modalities, including EMDR and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. My work is relational, collaborative and inclusive. My guiding principles, in and out of the office, are connection, curiosity, vulnerability, acceptance, and compassion. I am a real person with strengths and flaws, and also a seasoned professional with years of experience, wisdom, and a stash of helpful tools and strategies.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I am a social worker to my core and am mindful about integrating social work values into my private practice. Sliding scale and reduced rates are offered to ensure accessibility across economic means. I strive to maintain a practice that is open, affirming and embracing of individuals across gender and sexuality spectrums, and am committed to growing and learning in this area. There is always more to learn! My own background as a Cuban American raised in a bicultural home and community certainly informs my professional identity, clinical approach, and understanding of cultural dynamics related to mental and emotional health. I believe in the person-in-environment perspective that is a tenet of social work, and experience clients contextually, not just as a series of "presenting problems" or symptoms.
