Harm Reduction is just that, reducing harm in the use of substances. While there is value in abstinence models of treatment and many find success with this model, it doesn't work for everyone. I was trained in Harm Reduction Therapy a few years ago and find it has been helpful in embracing a de-stigmatizing and "curiously compassionate" approach to substance use for individuals and families.
Family therapy has always been a part of the work I've done with adolescents. I believe it's important to include the entire family (to varying degrees, depending on the adolescent and family dynamics) in treatment. I received post-graduate training at the Ackerman Institute for the Family. I incorporate a relational approach in my work with families and use components of other models as appropriate for the family. Again, there's no one size fits all.
I have been intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and have used this modality throughout my entire career, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. I have run DBT skills group, homework group and parenting/multi-family groups. I have use this modality to varying degrees in my work with individuals and families, depending on what is indicated and preferred.
In my practice with families and couples, I utilize aspects of Dialectical Behavior Therapy to support development of communication and emotion regulation skills. I also incorporate advanced training I received through the Ackerman Family Institute that draws from a number of Family Treatment Models, including a relational model that looks at relationships outside of the family (old and new, with people and systems) that impact family dynamics.
I have worked with the adolescent population over 15 years, with symptoms range from irritability and worry to self-injury, aggression, suicidal ideation, substance use and restriction. I have been intensively trained in Dialectal Behavior Therapy, equipping me to provide concrete strategies and hope for you and your teen. I’ve also participated in post-graduate training in Family Therapy that provides me a framework to support the whole teen in their environment.
