Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are distinct approaches that can be used together in a complementary way to enhance the effectiveness of treatment. CBT and EMDR are highly effective when used in conjunction with one another in trauma work. While CBT focuses on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors, EMDR aims to reprocess traumatic memories to reduce their emotional intensity. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event, series of events, or set of circumstances. An individual may experience this as emotionally or physically harmful or life-threatening and may affect mental, physical, social, and/or spiritual well-being. Examples include natural disasters, serious accidents, COVID, historical trauma, birth complications, bullying, and attachment trauma.
