About My Clients
I am passionate about assisting those in helping professions, such as social services providers, healthcare professionals, social workers, educators, and, YES, therapists! Helpers are particularly susceptible to “burnout,” the effect of witnessing the trauma their clients and students are going through, while having only a limited scope of influence to affect the situation. I specialize in trauma, women's issues, life transitions, and anxiety. LGBTQ+ and poly-friendly.
My Background and Approach
Mindful, somatic experiential therapy: Hakomi is a form of sensorimotor psychotherapy (also called somatic therapy), consisting of guided self-study that uses mindfulness to access traumatic memories and harmful beliefs encoded in the body - those places in your body where you feel restless, uncomfortable, ill, or just plain “don’t go there.” Together, we will harness the power of mindfulness, creativity, curiosity, and presence to courageously dive in, unearth your pain, and reshape your experience of the world. Hakomi brings together the wisdom of Buddhist and Taoist teachings with modern scientific findings on how the brain changes itself through experience, not just talking about it.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I work to be an ally to all genders and sexual expressions: lesbian, gay, bisexual/pansexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, and the asexuality spectrum. All relationship styles are welcomed here, including open / polyamorous relationships. I have been very active in queer and poly local community, but choose not to be at this time to avoid dual relationship ethical issues. It is my especial pleasure to work with those in helping professions. As a longtime educator and social service worker, I know that helpers are told often to guard against “burnout,” the effect of witnessing the trauma their clients and students are going through, day in and day out, but having only a limited scope of influence to affect the situation. I would be honored to work with you to mitigate the effects of secondary trauma. I moved from England to the United States in 1991, and from Maryland to Portland in 2013. I enjoy knitting, dancing, collecting and maintaining way too many houseplants.
