About My Clients

Do you struggle with substance abuse, relationship challenges, or general problems day to day? Understanding your past can be the key to your future! We will explore issues such as survival of interpersonal violence, an addicted parent, witnessing a violent event, or other events that have contributed to your addictive behaviors, mental illness, or unhealthy relationships. With this knowledge, we will discuss healthy coping skills and support networks to find the life you were meant to love!

My Background and Approach

I approach our work together as a bit of a detective, looking for the patterns and clues to show us why you are struggling with certain issues. If we understand the events that created these behaviors we can decrease the power they hold over your life. When I read my first trauma book I had a revelation. It was like putting on glasses for the first time and seeing the world in a whole new light. I understood that people are not born broken or bad, they have adapted to a means of survival in the face of a painful past. Facing these events will help you break free and begin building tools that will keep you free. I will teach you to recognize triggers, trauma repetition, and trauma responses. I want you to feel the power that comes from facing down your trauma and no longer feeling helpless in the face of panic attacks, anger, or depression. Each of us was born to travel a journey in life, I want you to look forward to your days to come, knowing the darkest days are now behind you.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe that everyone has suffered a trauma in their lives, whether it was a BIG T trauma or a little t trauma. Unfortunately, some of us find ways to soothe the pain in more self-destructive or stigmatized ways, causing the vicious cycle of pain to continue. I believe the healthiest clinicians have done their own trauma work to understand not only themselves but to gain insight into what they have to offer to their clients. In my own therapy, I embraced the idea that in each and every moment we have exactly what we need to be content. When you live in the present the past is over and the future hasn't happened yet. Having committed to my own therapy I understand the fear you may be feeling around inviting a clinician into your personal space. I applaud you for taking this first step towards healing and growth. I will always honor the relationship and hold space for you to grieve your losses and celebrate your successes. (Like when the Tarheels lose...we will discuss which that is!)
