About My Clients
From day one my career has been focused on providing necessary care for individuals who have had trouble finding the kind of therapeutic care they need including LGBTQIA+ clients, disabled clients, immigrants, survivors of complex trauma and members of marginalized racial, religious and ethnic groups. My clients have a variety of mental health and substance use challenges but what they all seem to share is a desire to experience their authentic selves in a often hostile world.
My Approach to Helping
I received my MA from Lesley University in 2003. My education at Lesley provided me with an excellent mix of knowledge from the worlds of traditional psychotherapy, expressive therapy and holistic therapy. I especially value that all my instructors directly addressed the impact of privilege and systemic oppression on mental health rather than treating mental illness as a purely individual phenomenon.
My Values as a Therapist
I grew up through the AIDS crisis and was horrified by the dismissive attitude the government and most people in the community had toward HIV+ individuals. I came to understand that society was willing to ignore this disease because the first people who had it were seen as undesirable and that realization radicalized me. I became a therapist with the explicit intent to make therapy accessible and safe to people who had been broadly disregarded for far too long. I advocate within my field for better integration of social justice principles in therapy, calling out when we slip into the white cisheteronormative framework of early 20th century psychology. I believe health care is a human right and the personal is political. Some organizations and causes I hold dear are The Pink Haven Coalition, Black Lives Matter, Planned Parenthood, The Autism Self-Advocacy Network, Trans Lifeline and Take This.
