About My Clients
Many of my clients begin therapy saying they've always felt like they didn't belong. They've never really been understood. They've been cast aside or have done a lot of pretending to fit a mold to fit in. Most people inherently want—need, really—to belong. When we feel we don’t, we come up with all kinds of strategies to meet that need, or numb the pain of going without. Sometimes these strategies stop working or get in the way of our being ideal selves. This is where therapy can be beneficial.
My Background and Approach
Therapy with me can be a soft spot to land and explore how your strategies have impacted your life and mental wellbeing. Once you feel safe, we together will uncover your own sense of belonging and build a narrative around what’s happened to you: the experiences you’ve had, the messages you’ve received, what you’ve had to do to get you where you are now. We will wade through feelings this has left you with as we also unravel the patterns and ideas that likely helped you survive but no longer serve you in the present. Together, we will create a new understanding of yourself and your story, along with filling your toolkit so that you can self-soothe, regulate emotions, assert yourself, and find belonging in whatever way fulfills you and your goals. I have worked for a decade with teens and adults impacted by the child welfare and criminal justice systems. I have witnessed the power of feeling that all parts of you are accepted and how this helps re-write stories.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
Most of us have felt lost at one time or another. Especially now, as we try to live with the lasting effects of the pandemic and a capitalistic society, many of us feel exhausted, alone, angry, unmotivated, and without a clear path. No one should have to experience these feelings by themselves. We can walk this road side by side and make sense of how you have been trying to find your way. I am a strong supporter of BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Indigenous, trans, and all marginalized populations. I hope to honor and hold all of your identities in our work together.
