There are many difficulties in life - fears, avoidance, compulsions, and even panic - where the only way out is through. That's the basis of exposure therapy. However, modern exposure therapy is much more gentle than just throwing you in the deep end and hoping you can swim. Our job is to work collaboratively to find places in your life (usually fears) where exposure therapy is appropriate. I have extensive training in this technique, and love to employ it in practice!
My ACT training was life changing, both personally and professionally. I honestly believe that ACT combines the best of both worlds - it is rooted in scientific knowledge, but branches out into the human condition, emphasizing the importance of the therapy relationship and connection to others. This is likely why my clients have repeatedly told me they saw improvements with ACT when nothing else was working.
My own struggles with panic attacks led me to the field of psychology - it seemed so fascinating that my own mind could hijack my entire body. After years of reading everything I could get my hands on, I have found that there are specific techniques (including ACT) that can reduce panic, and when combined with humor and a strong therapeutic relationship can help you re-enter your own life.
I've worked with autistic individuals for over a decade, and consider myself affirming of neurodiversity. What does that mean? That means that I don't see autism as a set of deficits - instead I see it as a different (very needed) perspective on life. Even so, autism presents a unique set of challenges to live in a world that doesn't celebrate this diversity, and often results in anxiety, confusion and withdrawal. We can work together to let your own unique way of being shine through.
Anxiety often keeps us from what we desire in life, yet it's an inevitable part of living. Therapy can help reconcile the two. I believe that most anxiety was, at some point, adaptive - it helped you keep yourself safe emotionally or physically. Once that danger has passed, however, we often find ourselves controlled by anxious thoughts and feelings. Let's work together to find ways to make that happen!
I also offer psychological testing and evaluation - please reach out to me for more information. This includes ADHD, Autism, Learning Disability, Personality, diagnostic, pre-adoption and pre-bariatric assessments.
