About My Clients
I appreciate working with a wide range of people from all backgrounds with all manner of difficulties, and I work especially well with creative people.
My Background and Approach
I'm a warm, thoughtful listener who shares insights and observations in a supportive environment where there is room for humor. Living in a culture where quick fixes reign, it's tempting to seek short-term solutions -- a big reason CBT is so fashionable. However, our issues generally take root over many years of perceiving, thinking, and reacting in certain fixed ways, typically ways we're barely aware of. So while CBT techniques have their uses (and I occasionally employ some), I've found that developing new patterns of handling stress and accessing real, lasting change takes time and requires commitment. This is why I have trained as a psychoanalyst, and why I continue to work on myself and my craft though ongoing study and training. In addition to working with patients one-on-one, I teach and supervise newer therapists, I write about and present on my clinical work, I edit other analytic writers' work, and I serve in several analytic organization leadership positions.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I consider myself a secular humanist who is interested in helping people articulate and claim their authentic selves and helping them work towards their potential in all aspects of living.
