About My Clients
Being a teen is hard. Being an LGBT teen is harder. The main task of adolescence is to find an identity. Easy right? No, it can be incredibly hard and isolating. Now add to that questioning one's sexual orientation or gender identity and you get a double whammy of potential confusion. I provide a safe container for LGBT kids to talk about their identity and how it might be impacting their day-to-day life and what they want for their future. I've been through it and wish I had someone to consult.
My Background and Approach
My therapeutic approach is LGBT and queer affirming. This means I have specific training and experience in working with LGBT and queer people so you don't have to educate me much, we just get into it. Specific courses I took included Human Sexuality, Lesbian Love, and Queer Counseling and Narrative Therapy. I have worked with LGBT youth, LGBT young adults, and their families through the COLORS program at Antioch University Counseling Center. I have worked with LGBT identifying clients in the homeless population on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles through the Wellness Center at The People Concern. I have led a weekly LGBT group for LGBT identifying individuals in the Skid Row homeless community. As a member of the LGBT community, I also understand firsthand some challenges and issues that LGBT and queer people face, whether that be day-to-day, in relationships, or with family. I also had a previous 20 year career in the business world and work with adults on a variety of issues.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe you are the expert in your own life. I believe your lived experience should be heard, believed, and respected. I believe everyone deserves healing and is worthy of love. And while you are the center of the therapy experience, I also believe a therapist shouldn't only listen. I will proactively engage with you and we'll develop a collaborative partnership with helping you as the #1 priority. No topic is off-limits in therapy and it's important to talk about things that you might have been told, "we don't talk about that." I’m a survivor of trauma and know it’s a continual journey. I’m a former Ironman triathlete and know about determination and the importance of listening to our bodies. I’m a creative writer and appreciate the impact of word choice and the significance that stories have on our lives. I’m a dog mom and aunt who knows the importance of play. I‘m a therapist who is ready to go on a journey with you.
