About My Clients
You want desperately to be happy, but you have forgotten how. The more you try to pull yourself out of the abyss, you find yourself pulled down even further. You've even become your own worst enemy, as the negative comments you hear are coming from inside your head. What you say to yourself must be true, because who knows you better? To top it all off, you also experience physical symptoms. You are close to giving up, but if you can just find the right therapist who has been there too...
My Background and Approach
My training, like a large percentage of therapists, is in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; it is the gold standard treatment for many mental health diagnoses. Though research also demonstrates that the type of relationship you have with a client can be just as important as the techniques used. I provide a supportive and culturally aware environment as I possibly can. I don't judge others, as my house is totally made of glass (it does look pretty cool though). I do not accept insurance as I find going that route to be a serious breech in your confidentiality and only you and I should determine how your treatment goes--not a huge money making monstrosity. I believe that uncovering your strengths is just as important as finding a mental health diagnosis--sometimes more important. With CBT, we look at how thoughts impacts feelings and how feelings impact behaviors. It really does make sense. Mindfulness practices are also introduced. You will love them. And I have coffee.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I am a card carrying member of the LGBTQ community, or at least I belong to the Human Rights Campaign. I still can't believe in this day and age there is still discrimination against sexual minorities. Just as I can't believe that we still have all these gender based inequalities, and race and ethnic group inequalities. You just keep plugging forward and try to make even small differences. I am a California transplant from the Midwest, which I really think makes me unique. The Midwest really churns out some special people. No offense to my born and raised in California friends, but making it through forty plus winters where it can get to minus 30 degrees with the windchill creates some kind of resiliency. I also try to be trauma informed. The majority of people who walk through my door I believe does have some sort of trauma histrory--and one person's is not more important than another's.
