Oh, relationships. Young adults have to deal with creating friendships, finding a partner, relating to their parents differently since they are no longer children, and have to deal with professors/bosses/and other authority figures. I work with clients to identify ways their relationships may not be serving them and create ways to be in relation with others in a way that serves them and their emotional health.
Transitions for young adults: going to college, finding a job, finding a partner, moving in with partner, getting married, having a child, getting divorced, getting promoted, and so on. SO MANY TRANSITIONS. I help my clients discuss the fears, sadness, loneliness, and difficulties that come with transition to then successfully transition to their new normal.
Do you ensure others are comfortable while you are uncomfortable? Do you put the needs of others above your own? Do you define your worth in how others respond or perceive you? Then, you are probably codependent. Codependency occurs when you are overly dependent on others (their love, approval, and acknowledgement) while neglecting yourself. We will discuss the self-destructive patterns of codependency, discard them, and create new ways to be undependent.
I love Bowenian/Multigenerational Family Therapy. Have you heard of a Genogram? It is a family tree with a therapeutic lense and IT IS AMAZING. I work with my clients are drawing out the most recent three generations and then we discuss patterns, ways of interacting, and significant events that have happened in their family and how they contribute to their current symptoms. It's brilliant.
Virgina Satir was a boss. She emphasized how clients needed to identify and process their emotions by verbalizing them in the moment. With Experiential interventions, we will work on developing your ability to name your emotions and the thoughts underlying them. We will do writing interventions and "replays" where we review triggering incidents from your past to help you bring a connection between what you are feeling, saying, and doing.
EMDR is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is an intervention that is one of the best evidence-based practices to a) process past trauma, b) address negative core beliefs you have about yourself, and c) develop positive beliefs about yourself to make significant changes in your personal and professional life. It is intense and it also freakin' works.
