Our thoughts affect how we feel, our behavior, and our response in situations and interactions. Through life experiences people develop beliefs and patterns of thinking which can become faulty and distorted. When thinking patterns are challenged we can start to tolerate and see situations differently. We also can change how we respond to life circumstances.

Experiences we have in childhood through adulthood shape who we are and how we interact in the world around us. Exploring past experiences gives people the opportunity to have more awareness and understanding of self including our values, beliefs, and relationships. This leads to gaining control of our actions and making better choices for ourselves.

People do not only experience loss through death. There are many reasons people can experience loss including divorce, moving, changing jobs, and physical health diagnosis. Not addressing loss can lead to relationship problems and family conflict, and impact our mental health. Loss needs to be acknowledged, worked through, and grieved through a healthy grieving process.

Anxiety can impact your daily functioning including relationships, ability to work, routines, and activities, if not addressed through education, identifying your own triggers, learning coping skills for managing anxiety as it is happening, and learning strategies to proactively address anxiety. Tools like relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and mindfulness techniques when used appropriately can reduce anxiety.

Depression can affect people in various ways including mood instability, cognitive skills for processing information and making decisions, sleep disturbances, and changes in appetite. People can experience difficulties in all areas of life including home, work/school, and in the community. Establishing routines, increasing physical activity, and creating a sleep hygiene routine are strategies to combat depression. It is important to resolve past trauma along with using strategies.
