Adjustment disorders are stress-related conditions. You experience more stress than would normally be expected in response to a stressful or unexpected event, and the stress causes significant problems in your relationships, at work or at school. Work problems, going away to school, an illness, death of a close family member or any number of life changes can cause stress. Most of the time, people adjust to such changes within a few months. LGBTQ individuals regularly encounter prejudice throughout their lives. This stigma can make life's journey more complex and challenging. Often people will feel stressed, anxious, or lonely when surrounded by negative attitudes and behaviors of others. With a record number of bills seeking to reduce LGBTQ rights, marginalized communities experience stress, violence, and mental health challenges at a higher rate than other members of society. This is a short list of challenges for the community.

A life transition represents a change from what we were accustomed to previously. These changes can be good or challenging but shift from the steady stream of life. They can be centered around a new job, an addition to the family, or moving to a new home. Sometimes these changes are becoming new parents or children are leaving for college. In response to these changes people experience different types of stress, anxiety, or depression.

Family systems theory defines the family as a complex social system, in which members interact to influence each other's behaviors. Exploring an individual through the lens of family systems helps to understand the interconnectedness of each person and the influence each person has on others.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, encourages patients to briefly focus on an uncomfortable or traumatic memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation, which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotions associated with the trauma memories.

CBT is a psychotherapy that combines cognitive therapy with behavior therapy by identifying faulty or maladaptive patterns of thinking, emotional response, or behavior and substituting them with desirable patterns of thinking, emotional response, or behavior.
