Prior to my own children coming out I was unaware of LGBTQ specific concerns. I have had to educate myself, both on a personal level, sharing this journey with my own children as well as on a professional level. I have gotten involved with PFLAG to support families with LGBTQ family members. I have learned so much and now give back as a board member. I have taken specific trainings and am open to learning from the people I am speaking to. I am learning how to use more inclusive language and am willing to being corrected when I hurt someone. I am becoming more aware of micro aggressions and unseen homophobia. I am becoming more educated on societal acceptance or lack of acceptance can affect getting documentation, changing names and gender identifiers, jobs, housing, parenting, partner and other legal standings. A Pride shirt I like "Be careful who you hate, it just might be someone you love."

"Change happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change." Part of you wants to change, another part is terrified. College, coming out, moving out, marriage, divorce, death, job loss, empty nest, retirement, chronic illness, new diagnosis, changing careers, all hold the familiar against the unknown. Making change requires you to be true to your values & purpose & show up to life as the person you want to be. I can help. Time to leave pain behind.

Both my undergraduate and Masters level training honed my interest in existential therapy. Essentially looking at life through the lens of "Am I living life of meaning?" "Without regret?" If not then what can I do about it. This is a helpful lens as we sometimes get stuck when we are too focused on the small information in front of us, and not paying attention to who we are as we show up in this world over time. Is the authentic and real me allowed to be present? When I am my stress is reduced and I can simply be.

Almost all of my interventions focus on Mindfulness based skills. I am a fan of Acceptance and Commitment therapy which uses mindfulness as a way to train our brains to hold thoughts lightly. Mindfulness also calls to mind staying in the present moment. Research continues to build a case for present moment focus, meditation and being intentional as ways to improve overall health and life satisfaction. I have taken classes, taught classes and participate in continuing education in Mindfulness based therapies as I find them effective, rapidly.

I am trained in EMDR through the Institute of Creative Mindfulness. I have Level 1 & 2 training under my belt and continue to pursue consultation and continuing education in this effective modality. EMDR is a technique as well as a therapy in itself. I find it helpful for those with stuck beliefs or repetitive patterns of thinking in addition to PTSD and many anxiety disorders. EMDR is a modality I use more days than not in my practice, and with practice comes fluency.

Even though I am a Cishet therapist, I am also a Mama Bear (free mom hugs). I assist parents to embrace their children when they come out. I have experience with trauma related to being gay/trans/nb, being misgendered & dead named. I am an EMDR therapist who can help you replace any messaging or belief you have, that's untrue and no longer serving you. I also specialize in taming anxiety, which often comes with the territory. I am open and affirming.

Overthinking, catastrophizing, panicking and shutting down are getting old. It's time to learn how to befriend that anxiety. Learn how to find balance in your life so anxiety no longer has its way. Of course, if it's OCD then we might need to talk back to that monster who's taking over your life. Anxiety is highly treatable.
